From the primal flash of aural lightning and thunder rumbles the percussion, Louie Bellson, on this CD, pursues his devotion to beautiful music, inspired by his deep, spiritual convictions.

Sacred Music is dedicated to Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899-1974), the man Louie considers his mentor and the man Louie still calls “The Maestro.”

On March 5, 2000, Louie Bellson and the University of Southern California Thornton Studio Jazz Band, Thornton Symphony Strings and 20-voice Choir presented the world premiere of the Louie Bellson Sacred Music Program at Bovard Auditorium at the University’s Los Angeles campus. The following week this music was recorded in Hollywood.

Featuring Louie Bellson composing, arranging and on drums, Bobby Shew on trumpet and flugehorn, John Thomas on trumpet and directing the band, Glenn Carlos directing the choir, Ann Patterson on alto sax and flute, Albert Alva on alto sax, Harold Garrett on trombone, and with Buddy Baker and Jack Hayes composing and arranging.
